Here are some photographs documenting the process of making highly porous carbon nanomaterials from sawdust! to read more take a look at the ‘Carbon for water treatment‘ page.
Sawdust and iron nitrate solution
After the iron nitrate solution has soaked into the sawdust
After drying in the oven
Heating the sample in a furnace
After heating to 800 °C
The X-Analysing the structure of the sample using X-rays
The X-ray diffractometer used to analyse the structure of the sample
An X-ray diffraction pattern showing ‘peaks’ which tell us the sample contains graphitic (graphite-like) carbon. The peaks show where X-rays have diffracted through the regular arrangement of atoms in the carbon structure.
