I am an interdisciplinary PhD student at the University of Birmingham under the Physical Sciences for Health Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). My research looks at characterising the mechanical and biological responses of biomaterials for the manufacture of 3D-printed cardiovascular implants. Being a member of the CDT has allowed me to work at the interface of Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Science, learning a huge variety of interesting science along the way.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to study at university but struggled to decide on which subject to pursue. Looking back, I think that the diversity of my AS Levels – Chemistry, Maths, Italian and Art – show that I was destined to become an interdisciplinary researcher! However, an excellent teacher inspired me to apply for a degree in Chemistry. I moved from Hertfordshire to the Midlands, where I graduated from the University of Leicester in 2017 (MChem). The Midlands has remained my home ever since; I completed the MSc year of the Physical Sciences for Health CDT programme in 2018 and am now working towards completing my PhD.
During my time at Birmingham I have loved getting involved with science outreach. I joined the ChemBAM team as I believe they do a fantastic job of showcasing some of the awesome chemistry that surrounds us in everyday life. I hope to show that you do not have to be a trained chemist to appreciate scientific research; equally, I hope to show that some of the most fascinating scientific research stems from collaborations between different disciplines, some of which may not even be directly related to science!
Outside of research I enjoy painting, playing the piano and travelling. One of the best perks of working in academia is the freedom it gives for travelling – I will never forget my first international conference in the beautiful city of Vienna.
