Consider using more dilute chemicals (e.g. acids and bases). This maximises safety in the case of a spill.
Working in a tray may be an option, and it is possible to buy non-slip mats (e.g. Dycem®).
For making it easier to transfer liquids from one vessel to another, consider using beakers with a wider mouth.
If in doubt, try things out with a blindfold. It sounds silly, but it can really give you an impression of whether something you’ve designed is feasible.
