Joe Davies

I am an undergraduate chemist at the University of Birmingham, heading into my fourth and final year in September 2019. I will be working on my masters project with Dr Zoe Schnepp, developing porous carbons for water treatment. I joined the ChemBam team in Summer 2019 because I am interested in a career in science communication and outreach after I graduate.

I grew up in a small town on the coast of South West Wales and moved to Birmingham for university because I wanted to experience life in the UK’s second city. I love living in such a vibrant and cultural place, but I definitely miss the beach sometimes!

I stumbled onto Chemistry, having absolutely no idea what I wanted to do when I started my A Levels. It wasn’t until I went on university open days and I could see the type of cutting edge research going on right now that my interest was really sparked. Now I’ve caught the science bug!

I am the UoB ChemSoc Events Rep 2018-2020 and I’ve been able to organise a ton of events so far, including the School of Chemistry’s annual ChemBall. Also, in my third year I joined the UoB Sign Language Society and have since gained my Level 1 BSL qualification and even joined the committee as the fundraising rep for the 2019-2020 academic year.

When I finally get some free time (and I’m not just asleep) I like to bake, go to the cinema and spend time with my friends and family.
