Hriljac(Dr Joseph Hriljac)

I am a Reader in the School of Chemistry, at the University of Birmingham, and conduct research in the field of solid-state inorganic chemistry. In particular, I am interested in materials chemistry, with emphasis on research into porous 3D and 2D inorganic solid materials. Much of the recent focus of my work has been on the materials that can ion exchange, in order to safely immobilise and clean up nuclear waste.

I am involved with a UK-Japan collaboration, in which we carry out research in nuclear waste management and site decommissioning, alongside industrial partners and researchers from other Universities in the DISTINCTIVE consortium, funded by the EPSRC. To find out more about this work, click here.

I studied my BSc in Chemistry at the University of Illinois, USA, and went on to study my PhD in Inorganic Chemistry with Professor D. F. Shriver at Northwestern University, USA. I then moved to the UK and undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, with Professor A. K. Cheetham. I moved back to the states following this, to take up a staff position at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, USA, and worked with Dr D. E. Cox, and also independently. In 1995 I moved to the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham.
